Welcome to Kandoit, a remarkable 7.47 ha (18.5 acres) block of native bush, (only 1 hr south of Auckalnd) with excellent views overlooking the Waikato. Only 2 minute drive off state highway 1 and walking distance into Ngaruawahia, a 15 minute drive into Hamilton, and 20 minutes from Waingaro Hot Springs.
We enjoy Kauri, Rata and Rimu that tower over a canopy of Tawa, Nikau, Kohekohe, Hinau, Rewarewa, Mangeao, Pukatea, Tanekaha, Kanuka and Manuka. (Some of the nicest native bush in the Waikato). Our bush track links to the Department of Conservation walkway that runs the entire length of the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve.
Tui sing at dawn and dusk. Wood Pigeons, Fantails, Kingfishers and Quail can be seen most days, and thousands of glow worms on the banks of the streams at night.
Starting in 2008 Kandoit and adjacent properties have been turned into a bird nesting sanctuary and volunteers are always welcome to assist with pest control and bird monitoring.
We are building New Zealands first ‘Earthship’ home. A house built using car tyres and other recycled materials.
Our Earthship is available for Bed and Breakfast for eco-friendly minded people, as well as wwoofers and friends who wish to stay in with us.
Our earthship is autonomous, we live off the main grid, have solar hot water heating supplemented by a wood & gas fired heater when there is insufficient sun. We have grey water & composting systems. We grow much of our own food, make our own bio-diesel & currently building a methane production plant for our gas cooking needs. Our goal is self-sufficient & self-reliance as much as is practical.
Part of Kandoit was once a clay quarry, we are restoring it to its former natural native glory.
We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures of our progress.
